DETAILED DIRECTIONS - Sierra Nevada:
From Velez Blanco, take the Velez Rubio road. Velez Rubio is about 7kms away – Market day there is every Saturday - travel through the town until the main "T" junction in the centre - Turn Right following the signs for "Granada", leaving the village and joining the main A92-N (West) on the second exit of the first roundabout.

Continue on the main Autovia past Baza and join the A92 at Guadix after about 1 hour.

Note: Guadix is the home of the Troglodytes and is allegedly worthy of a visit in it’s own right as you can see inside actual “used” cave houses – see brochures in Cortijo Rio Claro for details as we have not visited them personally!

Take Junction 285 and follow road into “Lopera”. Keep to the main road (if you can call a small road through a village “main”!) and drop into the valley below. Keep basically right through the valley and suddenly after about 2kms the first of two dams appears in front of you. The road goes up the right hand side of the dam and emerges on top of it. Turn left and continue over the dam (There are viewing points on the left and right just before crossing the dam)

Head for “La Peza” and then “Quéntar” where the second dam (which is well worth stopping at and walking across) is at the end of “Embalse de Quéntar”.

Continue on the same road, then, at “T” junction at “Cenes de la Vega”, turn right. There is yet another beautiful lake here.

If you intend to visit the “Sierra Nevada”, turn left to join main bypass. When joining bypass, turn left to climb up into the “Sierra Nevada” range where the road climbs all the way to the ski resort.

If you intend to visit the “Alhambra Palace”, stay on the road through “Cenes de la Vega” and follow the “Alhambra Palace” route signs (brown).

The journey home can obviously be the reverse of the above, or, as we generally do as we are tired by the end of the day, drive down from the Sierra Nevada and continue on towards Granada until you join the autovia around Granada heading for Gaudix. This will bring you onto the A92 north of Granada (having bypassed it) which then takes you directly to Gaudix where you bear left onto the A-92N and continue towards Murcia until Velez Rubio and home.
